TheTerms and Conditions for the Tools from Japan online store.
How we will operate.
This online store will be
unconventional in its operation, being more of an ‘online
purchasing service’ than a true online store. At the present
moment in time we feel that starting out in this way will allow us to
provide the best service possible.
What does this mean to you? Well, instead of stocking many tools, we will be stocking very little initially. What we will do is acquire the stock we do need as we need it, typically holding on to it only for as long as is needed to package, label and ship it out.
Operating in this way has both benefits
and drawbacks.
Initially we will be able to list a
large range of products without requiring significant overhead to
warehouse them and without tying up capital to purchase them. It also
allows us to pick and choose where we source our products from to
ensure the that our prices are as low as possible and if by chance
one of our normal suppliers is out of stock of a particular item, we
can usually find the same product or a suitable substitute quickly.
As we grow we will be able to look at
which products are popular which gives us another advantage in that
when we do begin to carry stock, we only need carry those items we
can expect to send out on a regular basis with an eye to reducing
order processing times as much as possible.
The main concern is that until we do
begin to keep popular items in stock, our order processing times will
be quite lengthy and we ask that you allow us approximately 2 weeks
to process your order. While this is quite a wait, we hope that our
pricing and shipping policies will help alleviate your concerns.
Our pricing policy is simple. Wherever
possible, our prices will match the ‘Street price’ here in Japan.
That means that if you happen to find yourself in a tool store here
in Japan some day, you should not expect to see much, if any
difference between the store's prices and ours. Occasionally we will
not be able to maintain that policy, and at those times we will
ensure that our price is still as reasonable as possible and offers
good value for money.
Our shipping policy is equally simple.
We will charge you actual shipping. What’s more, we will always
ensure that those shipping costs are as low as possible using
whatever means the Post Office allows us. We can see little advantage
offering good products for reasonable prices and then charging
exorbitant shipping fees.
It all adds up to a simple philosophy. To provide the best value for money that we can.
Instructions and Warranties.
Tools from Japan is based in Kagawa,
Japan and we will sell only products that are made and marketed in
Japan. As such, few if any products will have packaging or
instructions in English. If you have a particular problem with any
product, please do not hesitate to contact us. Most of the products
we sell will not usually require much in the way of instructions, but
where they are beneficial we will endeavor to provide them as we can.
Our location in Japan also poses
another problem. As these tools are intended to be sold and used in
Japan, any warranty or guarantee applies only inside Japan. This does
not affect all products of course, but in some instances the warranty
is null and void as soon as the product leaves Japan and cannot be
re-instated. Where this occurs, we will mention it and ask that you
are aware that if you purchase these products that if a problem
occurs, you are on your own. We dislike doing this, but our hands are
tied for the most part. Usually these products are those where demand
is high, our prices are low and we will provide them only as a
service. That translates as; we can get them, you want them,
but we don't really want to touch them and will touch them if we have
to but only once.
In most other circumstances, if a
problem occurs that you believe to be as the result of a faulty
product, please contact us immediately so we can rectify the problem.
This does not cover normal wear and tear, abuse, misuse or other
activities that may contribute to a product failure. If you use the
product in a reasonable manner and it does not live up to your
expectations then we will do everything within reason to correct the problem.
Please be aware that Japanese
woodworking tools are not the same as Western woodworking tools, and
have different strengths and weaknesses. The primary difference is
that Japanese tools are designed to stay sharper for longer than
Western style tools, but this also makes their working edges much
more fragile and more likely to chip or fracture in certain
situations. This is not a defect or fault, it is the nature of the
tools and suggest that you keep it in mind when using them. For most
woodworking you should not have a problem, but if you do find that
your tool edges are failing prematurely, firstly look at how you are
using them. If you deem your work methods to be suitable, then you
may indeed have a problem and we will be glad to help in any possible
way that we can.
If your work methods are not reasonable
(and we do know what the tools can and cannot do) then we will also
tell you that and will suggest ways in which to make your methods
more friendly to the tools.
Once we send something out, we don't
want to see it ever again! Fortunately most Japanese products are of
excellent quality but the odd dud slips through, and if you happen to
end up with one of them then we will replace or repair it as quickly
as possible at no cost to you. We may need the defective product back
in some cases, so please do not dispose of it before contacting us.

Lapsed Accounts: In order to keep the Tools from Japan membership roster current, if a Member does not access his or her account for a period of 180 days or more, Tools from Japan may, in its sole discretion, terminate such Member's account. Tools from Japan will endeavor to notify a Member of intent to terminate such Member's account by notice to such Member's provided email address at least 14 days prior to deactivation. If the Member fails to respond to such email notice within 14 days after the day it is sent by Tools from Japan, such Member's account will be terminated as noted above. Therefore, Tools from Japan strongly recommends that all Members keep their accounts and contact data current and in use. While Tools from Japan desires to prevent active accounts from being terminated prematurely, Tools from Japan has no obligation to maintain accounts that appear to have been abandoned. Each Member agrees that failure to access his or her account for 180 days or more conclusively indicates that such Member's account has been abandoned and that the account may therefore be terminated.
Verify Members' Address: Tools from Japan reserves the right to contact a Member via email to verify the accuracy of account information (including the Member's correct name and address) that is needed to provide the Member with the information he or she requested from Tools from Japan.
We hope this wasn't too scary to read, but it does all need to be here so you are aware of what we can and cannot do, will and will not do and what your part of the bargain is too. We also hope that we shall never have to refer to this document for any reason, but we present here because we know that no matter how hard we try, things will not always go as planned.
Thank you for reading,
