What makes a rasp, a rasp?

In essence, something that has 'teeth' suitable for removing material at a rapid rate, beyond the rate possible with a file or sandpaper yet with control of where material is removed and the rate at which it is removed.

They are shaping tools, and a good rasp is one of the most effective shaping tools available, yet a poor rasp is frustrating to use to the point of uselessness.

Rasps and rasp-like tools are a common item in Japan, some with unique features, others more conventional yet most all of them are effective, efficient tools worthy of consideration if you find yourself needing a rasp, because no other tool will do.
