Ink and chalk.

Sumi (ink) is the traditional choice for marking in Japan, and it is still as popular as ever today. The markings are easy to see, semi-permanent and if the need arises, easy to remove.

Chalk is less popular in Japan, but because sumitsubo (ink line) and chalk lines are functionally the same, chalk is not at all unusual. You can buy a chalk line almost anywhere in the world, but the Japanese have lots of tricks that have been applied to their ink lines that also happen to work very nicely with chalk lines.
