King Deluxe #300
¥2,750
This coarse stone is one of the latest generation King sharpening stones, and bares little resemblance to their previous offerings that have been widely available for generations.
The first significant point is that unlike most King stones, this one requires no soaking. Simply apply water to the surface and work away. To a point, leaving this stone soaking may harm it. After use, simply put it away and allow it to dry naturally away from heat or cold. The second very significant point is that this stone is highly resistant to dishing, so it stays very flat regardless of what you might do to it. For those of you who desire a stone for flattening chisel and plane iron backs, this stone is almost 'must have'. And while it is very coarse, there are no open pores so it's not too aggressive or 'grabby' for repairing edge chips or for thinning down clad knives.
At #300 grit, it is quite coarse and works rather quickly but is best suited to carbon steel and simple alloys. While it is reasonably effective with High Speed Steels and the more complex stainless steel alloys, the performance in comparison to how well it works with the more simple steels is quite noticeable.
A truly impressive sharpening stone, and something very unexpected from King.
207 x 66 x 34mm.
(This stone ships with small bottles of #120 and #240 grit for flattening, conditioning and speeding up this stone, and are nearly essential for getting the best performance from it.)
