New cat(egory) and new(s)…

Hi again Faithful Reader,

Quite an interesting day today.

I got the undivided attention from the president of Sigma Power corporation, Mr. Tsuyoshi Saitoh for a couple hours this afternoon.

And we talked. And talked. And talked…

Actually I did most of the talking, and I think the co-pilot was surprised/impressed. Usually I don’t say much, but today I couldn’t shut up.

And there were a few little surprised. Mr. Saitoh is, I think, younger than I am. I got a post card a few months back that the torch at Sigma Power had been passed on, and so was not expecting someone too old, but certainly not someone of about my age.

This has good and bad points. Good in that Sigma Power has longevity in it’s leadership and that the changing of the guard has passed without there being a panic. Bad in that Mr. Saitoh is still not 100% up to speed with everything, which is why I did most of the talking.

Fortunately, he listens well so the ‘bad’ will soon be a memory, nothing more.

In short, I was very glad to have met him and will certainly be speaking with him in the future.

And on the whole Sigma Power thing…

I’m waiting on a bunch of stones, and they’re on back order. The new stones, when they arrive will be wearing new clothes too. Good timing, since this was something I planned to ask about. They should be arriving next week some time, so those of you who are waiting, that’s why. I’ll make sure the extra wait is inconsequential.

A largish gold box was left here. And as much as I like what’s in the box, I’ve got a feeling that it might be best if I make it travel over the wide blue sea.

And finally, there’s nothing new coming up in the future from Sigma Power. Not stone wise at least. I may be putting up some of what I’ve called their “back catalog” which is full of old school stones, in numerous variations. Nice to be able to pick and choose which stone is nicest based on what it’s made from, rather than it’s brand which usually means something completely different to what you were hoping for.

But that may change. Sooner rather than later. >wink<

That’s it for now.

Oh, the new category is for store news, and this is the first post stuck into there. I think that I’ll likely be posting more often here in the future. One can only hope (or not!).

Thanks for reading,

Stu.

    old school….toishi?

  • Hi Dave,

Yep, old style stuff. Toishi like they used to be.

I’ve tried pretty much all of Sigma Power’s older stuff, of which they tell me are still popular with the older professional knife sharpeners in Tokyo and surrounds, and they’re generally pretty good.

Not too soft, not too hard. They tell you what they’re doing and get the job done fairly quickly. Besides, what’s not to like about having a choice of a WA, GC or Natural abrasive finishing stone? And to make your choice without worrying about the price so much, but more about what might get the job done best for what you’re doing?

Given a choice between one of these older SP stones and a King or Norton (about the same price bracket), I don’t think the decision to try one of these new/old stones is a difficult one to make.

Oh, and the not so pointy thing is amazing. I need to tell the fellow who made it to get cracking on a dozen or more of them, and also tell him that these are mine, and only mine.

(Not that the latter needs to be said, but I’ll say it anyway just to make sure…)

    Stu.
